[PICS] Lotus Festival 2017

Saturday, 2nd September 2017 saw the 11th Lotus Festival on a wonderfully sunny day at Brands Hatch Motor Racing Circuit. With a full race card including Lotus Sprinting, Elise Trophy and Cup races, they were joined on track by classic F1 demonstrations and a lap of the circuit by the owners of the Lotus Type 110 bikes, made famous by Chris Boardman in the ’92 Rio Olympics.

With over 750 Lotus cars turning up on the day, the circuit was packed with beautiful examples of Hethel’s finest. A record number of clubs in attendance bought in over 250 cars themselves and we’re very grateful for their continued attendance. The traders at the event saw very brisk business with many cars sold by the dealers who bought stock along for sale.

The well subscribed Show & Shine competition produced some fantastically presented cars, with the decision in one category coming down to how clean behind the fuel filler cap was, as there was nothing else to choose between the two. The winners were:

  • Pre-1974; Roger Penn – Elan S4 SE
  • 1974-1995; David Combes – Esprit Turbo
  • 1996-2008; Trevor Buesnel – Elan M100 SE
  • Post 2009; Paul Hanniford – Exige S2
  • Overall winner; Jim Estall – Elan Sprint

We’d like to thank everyone who attended the event and who helped to make it such a great day for Lotus lovers from across Europe.

Lotus 110’s in attendance

The Lotus Type 110, the road going version of the bike made so famous by Chris Boardman in the 1992 Olympics (his version was the Type 108) will be making a group appearance at this years Lotus Festival. We are expecting the largest collection of them ever, with a dozen owners bringing their bikes along for display. In replica outfits, the owners will also be getting the chance to ride a lap or two around the iconic Brands Hatch circuit!

2016 Show and Shine Winners

With a record number of entries, judging was very tricky this year for the winning cars in the Show and Shine Competition. Not a concours d’elegance, the judging is based on the condition of the car at the time and also the back story of the owner and car are taken into account.

  • Pre-74: David Brown – Mk1 Lotus Cortina
  • 1974-1995: Fabian Steele – Lotus Esprit S1
  • 1996-2008: Dan Sands – Lotus Exige S
  • Post 2009: James Watson – Lotus Evora
  • Best in Show: Roger Penn – Elan S4 SE
  • Honourable mention: Chris Cole – Turbo Esprit

Thanks to all who entered, congratulations to the winners and also thanks to Guy Munday for assistance with the judging.

6 times Olympic Gold winner Jason Kenny to race at Brands Hatch

Strictly speaking, he’s not in a Lotus but British Olympic hero Jason Kenny will swap two wheels for four at Brands Hatch this weekend, when he takes to the wheel of a Radical SR3 RSX in the Radical Challenge Championship on the full Grand Prix circuit.

Kenny won a trio of Gold Medals in the Rio velodrome last week to match former Team GB colleague Sir Chris Hoy’s record of six Golds and one Silver. Hoy also raced Radical sports prototypes when he switched to motor racing three years ago, and earlier this year Chris made his debut in the Le Mans 24 Hour race.

2016 Show and Shine entries hotting up!

The search is on to find the best-prepared Lotus at this year’s festival, with entries to the annual ‘Show and Shine’ competition now open.

Owners of Lotus cars spanning the company’s illustrious history are invited to submit their pride and joy to the contest. However you’ll need to hurry, as just 20 places are available on a first-come-first-served basis.

A special team of judges will assess the cars, which will be divided into four categories: Pre 1974, 1974-1995, 1996-2008 and Post 2009. This takes place between midday and 1pm on Sunday 28th with trophies being awarded at 1:30pm so please be by your cars as the judges will want to talk to you. Prizes will be awarded based on overall appearance and condition, taking into account whether a car is restored or original. Entries to the competition are free and entitle the owner to two weekend passes to the event, with parking in a special display area. You will have to be on site by 9am on Sunday 28th due to vehicle movement restrictions. To enter, Click Here.

Lotus Type 102 Confirmed for Festival

The Lotus Type 102 is confirmed for the track F1 demonstration laps at Brands Hatch this weekend.

The Type 102 is an exciting combination of two great marques, Lotus and Lamborghini and interestingly it is the only Lotus ever to run a V12 engine. Designed under the technical direction of Frank Dernie the 102 represents about 150,000 hours of R&D, wind tunnel, continuous engineering and design time from concept to racing car.

All composite manufacture was undertaken in-house at Ketteringham Hall. (The Team even made a super light carbon fibre helmet for Warwick and knuckle protectors for Donnelly.) The engine is a 3.5 litre 80 degree 48 valve V12 which gave the team a competitive 650 plus horsepower, from a strong and practical unit. The gearbox is a 6 speed (+ reverse) transverse unit designed by Team Lotus and incorporating Lamborghini internals.

The 102 was raced in the 1990 F1 World Championship by Derek Warwick and Martin Donnelly. They achieved some good points finishes in a competitive season for Team Lotus, thereby preserving the team’s vital top 10 status. Martin Donnelly suffered a big accident at Jerez. Johnny Herbert deputised for Martin for the rest of the season, making his Grand Prix début at the Japanese GP.
